IIT-Kanpur First to Establish Economic Sciences Department

IIT-Kanpur is first among the IITs to start an Economic Sciences department. The new department came into operation from Saturday and students clearing JEE Advanced 2017 and also willing to pursue Bachelor of Science (BS – Economic Sciences) program would get admission in it.

IITs Estimate It Will Cost Rs 22,000 Crore to Improve Global Rankings

The HRD Ministry’s ‘Project Vishwajeet’ — aimed at catapulting the IITs to the top league of global academic rankings — could cost the government close to Rs 22,000 crore over five years. Directors of seven IITs met the ministry officials on October 20 and sought Rs 21,870 crore as investment to improve their research output, faculty, infrastructure and international outlook in order to break into the top 100 club of global university rankings by 2018 and top 50 by 2020.

Boosting Canada-India Academic Ties

Canada’s University of Toronto President, Meric Gertler, boosted academic ties with India on his first ever visit, from January 27 to 31. While in India, Dr. Gertler co-hosted a workshop on “Universities in Urbanization: Building Healthy, Sustainable & Innovative Cities” with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT Bombay). He also met with Minister of Urban Development M. Venkaiah Naidu, spoke at a conference on cities and urbanization hosted by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and visited the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR). Following the advice of Indian students at the University, Dr. Gertler also took the time to enjoy the food and the culture of India.
